Some breeders will sell puppies online, either through their own website or dog selling sites like Next Day Pets. While it seems like this will allow you to reach a wider audience of potential puppy owners, it's actually better to avoid this practice. You really want to meet your buyers in person and see how they interact with the pups before you agree to sell to them. While some breeders attempt to use Craigslist to sell puppies, it's actually against the website's terms and conditions.
You may however see people listing dogs up for "adoption" while asking for a rehoming fee in. In some cases, these truly are people looking to rehome a pet that is not working out for them and they ask for a fee to make sure that you are financially able to care for the pet. In others, these are breeders looking to sell pet locally under the guise of an adoption scenario. Craiglist is often used as an option by backyard breeders looking to sell a puppy fast and does not tend to attract owners who are knowledgeable and looking for a quality dog and breeder.
You also risk having your ads flagged and removed by other users of the pet boards on Craigslist as well as the admin team which makes posting them an inefficient use of your time. Ive been looking at English Bulldogs. And today I have had 2 different people claim they have puppies for sale. One man claims to be a Morgan Willaims and he could have the dog delivered to me.
When I said I would drive 3 hours to pic up, he said he would discuss it with the family. The other claims to have 4 pups his name was James Scott. It advertised pups in my town but when we communicated he now claims his mother died in Utah and they were her pups.
Ive bought 2 dogs years ago online.Legit people have a whole sight about their dogs and available litters. You receive documentation on the dogs before purchase. And documents for the airlines with flight numbers and time flight comes in. Ive had 3 dogs that have flown to their new homes.Check with airlines as to cost of flying an animal with a certified crate. A responsible breeder will take back one of their dogs at any time, but you may see owners who bought a puppy from a less than reputable breeder advertising their puppy for adoption with a rehoming fee.
A rehoming fee in this instance is designed to make sure the new owner is capable of caring for the dog and places value on it. Some owners will also ask a fee to recoup the money they lost from the purchase of the dog and supplies. It's up to the potential new owner to decide if the amount of the rehoming fee is reasonable.
Some owners will try to use the fee to recoup all of their financial losses but this will make it harder for them to sell the dog unless it's a rarer, hard-to-find breed. They may also find potential owners who object to that high of a fee because the original intent is to make sure the dog is going to a responsible home and not to make back all the money you spent. A better way to utilize a pet store would be to work with a local pet shop to advertise your puppies for sale, and even allow you to come show them on a weekend day, assuming they are old enough to be out. You can then meet prospective owners and give them applications to fill out for the puppies and go through the interview and sales process outside of the store. A store may be willing to do this for a percentage of the puppy sale, or, simply to get more potential pet owners into their doors to become long-term customers, making it a win-win for both of you.
Mike Wilborn, a barber inPlainfield, Ill., barely escaped becoming a victim in a pet scam. She discovered the identical photo of the dog had been posted on an internet site eight years before. At that point, Wilborn contacted BBB to inform it of the fraud. Typically, the breeder will offer a replacement pup, but still allow the owner to keep the original dog if he or she so chooses.
The breeder may also opt to accept the original dog back and provide the necessary medical care. Another practice that some breeders use is selling puppies to local pet shops that sell puppies. Pet shops do not have a good reputation for caring properly for puppies, and even the best care can still lead to puppies with developmental and behavior problems because of how they are kept in a pet shop. It is much better for the puppies to stay in a home environment until they go to their new forever home compared to staying in a small pen or enclosure.
This can actually lead to the same types of issues puppy mill dogs have such as difficulty with house training, fear, anxiety and stereotypy behaviors. As noted earlier, most puppy scams appear to be operated out of Cameroon, a country in West Africa that shares a border with Nigeria. The FTC report notes that a large number of the complaints about pet frauds involve victims instructed to send money through Western Union to Cameroon.
AA419 also confirms that the source for this fraud is Cameroon. Another volunteer group that focuses on pet frauds isPetscams.com, which regularly assists in shutting down fraudulent pet websites. The organization also look to see if the Internet Protocol address used for the site has also been used for other bogus sites. If these steps show that the web site is bogus they contact the company that issued the domain name and ask that it be removed. Some domain name registrars are more helpful than others, but in most cases after this process bogus web sites are removed. Of course if the scammer has spent money advertising the web site, this effectively makes their other advertising of that site worthless.
On the other hand, as shown, it is fairly easy to just obtain new domain name. There are only a few components needed to run an online pet scheme. The thieves need a domain name for a site, which can be easily purchased online. They also need a hosting company with servers to contain the site itself, which they can also buy online. They need site content, which they can create or steal from the actual site of a pet breeder or shipping company.
They need a phone number, which they can obtain from a voice over internet protocol phone or a cheap cell phone, and email addresses to communicate. Finally, some thieves may pay for internet advertising such as sponsored links to get more people to their web sites. Olicia BryantofDallas, Tex., was retired from the Postal Service and looking for a puppy. She does not use the internet all that often, but went online and found a puppy at-rottweiller.com. After some texting and emailing she sent $702 through MoneyGram to the "breeder" in Worthington, Ohio for the dog, shipping and a crate. The next day she received a call from a "second company" saying that she had bought the wrong crate, and would need to pay another $1000 for a new one, but that this money would be refundable.
She then told the fraudsters that she knew it was a scam and was going to report it. She then filed complaints with MoneyGram and BBB. In addition, in nearly every fraud case, the thieves instruct the potential buyer that an animal must be shipped from a remote location. In addition to creating phony websites to advertise the animals, the thieves similarly will develop bogus websites that appear to be legitimate transport companies. Petco is your one stop shop for all your pet's needs.
Shop your neighborhood Petco or online and save with curbside pickup and repeat delivery. Again, many people do not care to register their dog so why does this matter to you? AKC has standards of care and will inspect your kennel. Many breeders could not pass AKC inspections for basic cleanliness and care so they made up their own registries, ACA, APRI and CKC.
With some of these registries you send in a photo and they will send you a registration paper! I would NEVER recommend buying a puppy from any breeder using these alternate registries. Often it goes hand in hand with no health testing by OFA and many times these dogs are even mixed with other breeds to create "rare" colors such as pinto's. Using Facebook has similar drawbacks to using Craiglist. Facebook's commerce policy prohibits the sale of animals.
However, just like Craigslist, you can go onto the Facebook Marketplace and see pets for sale most days. Also like Craigslist, these posts are flagged and deleted but some do squeak by. You risk having your posts removed and again, as with Craigslist, you may not attract the best type of buyer. Some breeders use their Facebook pages as a place to answer questions from owners after their puppies come home and other owners benefit from the group educational atmosphere. They also encourage owners to post pictures of their puppies on the page throughout their life. The thieves almost always ask the victims to pay to ship the pet by air, and they will send victims to bogus web sites of pet transportation companies set up to support the fraud.
Pet buyers rarely realize that the transportation sites are often a part of the fraud. Like many frauds, this one has adapted and evolved over the years. But while there was no charge for the animal itself, the scammers insisted the potential buyer pay for transportation and other costs associated with getting the pets to their new owners.
BBB urges the public to be on guard against online puppy scams; inspect an animal in person before paying money, and pay by credit card if you do make an online purchase. At times, the thieves may claim the pet is stuck at an airport in transit and additional money is needed for food and water. The requests for money on one pretext or another will continue as long as the victim continues to send money.
In the current digital age, it is no surprise that the first step in many people's search for a new pet begins with the internet. Alas, even the most careful online search is likely to put a consumer in contact with a potential thief. Petco is an industry leading health and wellness company focused on improving the lives of pets, pet parents and our partners.
Plan to send a two day supply of the puppy's current kibble home with the new owner. This will give him or her time to go to the pet supply store and pick up more. Derouin said travelers can sometimes take small dogs or pets on a plane if the animals will fit beneath their seat, although rules differ from airline to airline.
Other pets be in a crate and transported in cargo. Also, no one can simply drop a pet off at an airport to be transported the following day. To transport pets within the U.S. the sender has to provide a veterinarian check and the pet must have health papers. Even more regulations apply for International shipments. It has 400 members in 80 countries around the world.IPATA Executive Director Cherie Derouinsays they get calls from pet scam victims every day. And she believes this problem is getting worse.IPATA, itself, does not ship pets, but rather represents members that do that work. Complaint numbers only hint at the size of the scheme. The next day Hutcherson received an email saying that the dog had been transported as far as Oklahoma City, and she was instructed to purchase health insurance for the dog at an additional cost of $980. She asked why the payment had not been disclosed earlier, and began suspecting she was being defrauded.
At that point, the "seller" threatened to call the FBI and have her charged with animal abandonment. An email that appeared to be from Delta Airlines instructed her to send another $200 through MoneyGram to Cameroon, which she did. A similar story I got when trying to sell my dogs. I got a check for three times more than my asking price.
Same story, his daughter actually died and his assistant is handling the purchase of the dog. My thoughts were, "So your daughter died and you buying dogs!!??" I wonder who are they stealing this money from. Everything looks legit but I know there is something wrong. I don't feel comfortable depositing this check in my account.
Scam artists have bilked animal lovers by posting ads with pictures of puppies and other pets. The ads often include a compelling story about why the puppy is available, and details about his or her lovable personality. The ads may request a reasonable payment for the pet, say $300, or they may claim the pet is available to a good home for free – if you pay for shipping.
